EMC/EMI Course Overview

The course duration is 32 academic hours and will be delivered over 4 meetings of 8 academic hours each
This is a comprehensive and intensive course.
The course, is presented by  leading technical experts from industry and academia with many years of experience. (see Lecturers)
The course provides a thorough introduction to EMC/EMI including: Design to EMC compliance, Measurements, Simulation, Hi speed PCB design, Standards and Regulations
Implementing suppression techniques along with simulation analysis is required to ensure functionality for signal integrity as well as complying with EMC requirements.
The earlier a potential EMC problem is identified, the less disruption it causes to the design process. By including EMC compliant design at an early stage, additional costly development iterations can be avoided later on.
The Course motto is “Right from the First Time” but in case you encounter a second compliance test round the course will provide you with the tools to identify locate and deal with the problems
The main course outline includes:
  • Inrtoduction and Principles of: Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) (led by Oren Hartal)
  • EMC/EMI measurements, in time and frequency domains including spectrum analysis and Case studies (led by Dr. Shmuel Miller)
  • EMC/EMI Simulation  (led by David Aviram)
  • Fundamentals of PCB design for Power and Signal Integrity and EMC Compliance (led by Shlomi Zigdon)
  • EMC standards, the requirements that commercial and military electronic systems must meet-a comprehensive review of standards and regulations (led by Oren Hartal)
  • An Introductory tour in Hermon Labs to acquire familiarity with the environment and testing methods

EMC/RFI and RF/Microwave Measurements

Lab tests:

  • Power measurements by several detectors (incl. peak, ave. and RMS)
  • Sensitivity measurements (for QAM and Pulse signals) with averaging (using varying BV and screens averaging)
  • Phase noise measurement of a frequency source
  • Measurement of NF (of an amplifier and SSBNF of a mixer)
  • Peak-to-Average measurement (PAPR)
  • Measurement of third-order intercept point (IP3) and SFDR
Spectrum Analyzer

Lab tests:

  • Basic calibration
  • Improved calibration (suitable for reject band of filters)
  • Measurement of BPF (S-parameters, Phase and delay response)
  • Measurement of an Amplifier (AM/AM, AM/PM, 1dB comp., Harmonics)
  • Measurement of load mismatch, and perform Single-Stub matching
Vector Network Analyzer-VNA

Lab tests:

  • Perform a broadband calibration (de-embedding)
  • EVM tests
  • Measurement of I-Q imbalance and IR (image-rejection)
  • BER measurement
  • Measurement PAPR of a detailed-QAM-constellation
  • Measurement of BW and ACPR
  • Measurement of emission mask-compliance for a WCDMA signal without and with an amplifier

Oren Hartal

Oren Joined RAPAEL-Israel’s Armamaent Development Authority in 1966, served as a team leader and EMC Section head, Head of the Electro-Magnetics Department and Directorate. Finally, Chief Scientist, till 2005. He also was a UN expert to INDIA on EMC.
Presently Oren is EMC/EMI Designer and Consultant. Providing services on EMC and ELF magnetic fields to many industrial and engeeniring organizations and to government agencies. Conduting courses on EMC topics in Israel and abroad.
Oren Holdes  a BSc, and MScEE from the Technion-The Israel Institute of Technology
Oren is author of the book “EMC by Design” Senior member of SIEEE, Certified srvice provider by the ministry of environmental protection, and has Awards and recognition from RAPHAEL, IEEE and SIEEE.

Shmuel Miller Ph.D.

Dr. Shmuel Y. Miller is a Sr. Lecturer and Head of the EE Department at the OBC.
He was executive vice president of systems & solutions of Celletra Ltd., a company that provides advanced radio coverage and capacity enhancements for cellular networks. His previous positions were vice president at MARS Antennas and vice president at Geotek.
During the past fifteen years his main activities have been on analysis and design of enhancements for cellular radio networks, linearization technologies and radio distribution systems.
Dr. Miller received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, and a Ph.D. degree in Information Sciences and Systems (EE Dept.) from Princeton University.
Dr. Miller is a coauthor of over 20 patents and patent-filing and co-author of “CDMA Radio with Repeaters,” book, Springer NY 2007.

Michael Nikishin

Mr. Michael Nikishin is an EMC and Radio group manager in Hermon Labs. He is an expert in EMC and Radio products certification and approval according to variety of national and international standards, test and measurement methodologies and international accreditation programs.

Over the years he provided lectures in multiple EMC seminars and training programs.

Michael holds an MScEE from Technical University of Moldova.

David Aviram

David Aviram is an expert in Electromagnetic Field & Simulations – including the areas of EMI/EMC, EMC Product Design, Numerical EM Simulations & Analysis.

David Aviram has more than 13 years of experience in the EMC/EMI fields. In 2009 he joined Elbit System Ltd-Air Division, and established the infrastructure for electromagnetic analysis capabilities.

In 2017 David joined the Israeli office of Altair as an EM application engineer.

David received his B.Sc. in physics  from the Hebrew  University and has extensive knowledge in Electromagnetic Environmental Effects(E^3)

Zeev Iluz Ph.D.

From 2002 to 2006, Zeev Iluz worked at ELTA  (IAI Company) as an antenna engineer developing phased array antennas for radar and communication.
From 2006 to 2009, he was with ALVARION developing antennas for MIMO communication, both base station and indoor antennas.
In 2013 he joined CST AG in Darmstadt, Germany, as an application engineer.
Zeev Iluz received the B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in electrical and computer engineering in 2000 and 2002, from Ben-Gurion University, Beer-Sheva, Israel.
Dr. Zeev Iluz received the Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tel-Aviv University.
His thesis focuses on the design and characterization of nano-antennas for the infrared and optical ranges with applications in novel sensors and energy harvesting

Shalom-Shlomi Zigdon

Mr. Shalom-Shlomi Zigdon is the Co-Fouder and CEO of the iTech iCollege and Chairman of the international “EMC, Signal and Power Integrity-IEEE Symposium and Conference” in Israel.
In his previous positions he served as an R&D Engineer at the IAI, Director of Engineering and Development at Koor Electronics and Director or Engineering and PCB design at Elbit Systems.
Mr. Zigdon is Consultant at various Defense Organizations (such as: Rafael, Elbit, BVR and more) and Hitech companies (such as Nice, Optibase,  Astronautics and more) and was Lecturer at various training organizations (such as HiTech/Matrix, John Bryce, MediaTech and Sela)
Mr. Zigdon is a member of the following standardization bodied:
IPC-2251 Design Guide for the Packaging of Electronic Circuits that utilize High-Speed Techniques
IPC-2221 Generic Standard on PCB DESIGN
IPC-2226 HDIS – Hi Density Interconnecting
Mr. Zigdon holds a B.Sc degree in Electrical Engineering from the Technion Israel Institute of Technology.

Abstract​
A Software-Defined-Radio (SDR) design methodology employing Matlab/Simulink, an RF front-end (FE) and a PC is presented and demonstrated. Analog and digital modulation receiver examples are used to facilitate the flexibility and effectiveness of this approach.

Simulation Software
